Regarding a woman on BrazCo commish's court

We asked Precinct 4 County Commissioner-elect Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh if she was the first woman to be elected to the august body known as the Brazoria County Commissioners Court, and she replied:

"Lillian Travis served out Sonny’s term after he died. She is the only one I know of but I have not checked the records."

So now you know.

If you're not an old-timer around the Petrochemical Underarm and the name "Sonny Travis" rings a bell, then it might be because there is a "Sonny Travis Boat Ramp" located on the Brazos River Diversion Canal under the Highway 36 Bridge. There is no charge to use the boat ramp, which is the way Sonny woulda wanted it. The ramp is made of concrete and there is a paved parking lot where you can leave you pickup and trailer after you cast off to go fishin.

By the way, Mary Ruth will be sworn into office on Jan. 1. There will be cornbread and black-eyed peas served after the swearin-in.

(Mary Ruth is pictured here talkin to some schoolkids in a photo the paper in Clute published last year.)

I did research and found Commissioner McLeod, a wonderful lady from Angleton, served our county in the early 40's. She replaced her husband at his death and was elected and then reelected.
She and my Pops were on court together. Her grandchildren still live in Angleton. I have connected with them and also the granddaughter of Commissioner Evans from Avin at that time.
Stay in touch.
