Ch-ch-ch-changes

We understand that Brazosport native Leigh Hopper is leaving her employment as medical writer at The Houston Chronicle -- voluntarily, of course.

Besides writing stories in the circulation-dwindling newsprint version of the Houston daily, Leigh writes the popular Medblog. According to the grapevine, Leigh, a former cheerleader for Brazoswood High (which won its playoff game Saturday and could go to STATE!) will depart the fast-paced Houston journalism scene on Jan. 2. Good luck, Leigh.

While we're on the subject of change, we'd also like to take this opportunity to wish a fond farewell to John Nowlin and his wife Marilyn, who are shutting down Nowlin Jewelers to retire after 55 years of serving Brazosport.

So the next time you need to purchase some of the ill-gotten gains of the despicable diamond industry, you'll probably have to go to one of the chain stores in the mall.

I will miss Leigh's blog and the Nowlin's store.

We've known the Nowlin family for over 40 years, as far back as when "Mrs. Nowlin", who would be John's mother, still lived on Lantana Ct. in Lake Jackson.

And my brother's Christmas Eve shopping routine usually includes a visit to their store, knowing anything wrapped in a small box and sealed with a Nowlin's sticker will more than appease his wife.(Much more than the impractical underwear sets I used to help him pick out when he was first married!)

Best Wishes to Leigh, our "local girl makes good". I hope she continues in journalism or maybe even in the medical field, some field where she will continue to make a difference in peoples' lives.

Thanks for the post Banjo.
