quote/unquote

Editor's note: This is another in a continuing series of quotes culled from various periodicals by a reader in St. Louis who includes The Brazosport News in his daily information diet. He is a former newspaper writer who has worked for papers in St. Louis, Houston and Houma, La.

"There is nothing drearier than following a loser all the way to the grave. The candidate is exhausted, the staff is crabby, the hotels are bad and get worse, and the campaign generates less and less news. Off in the distance is the Winner's campaign * a cornucopia of big stories, excitement, power, money, and a burgeoning sense of promise. Everybody in the business is suddenly talking about the Winner's campaign. The best reporters seem to be there. It grows like a fad, you have to be there, at the center of the action."
*-- "The Boys on the Bus, Riding with the Campaign Press Corps" by Timothy Crouse (1972)

"If we go take a hard line on athletes' drunk driving, I think we're somewhat hypocritical that we're going to serve alcohol at games. I don't want any guys drunk driving. But how do you think these other drunks get home from NBA games?"
*- Charles Barkley commenting in the 4.16.08 Denver Post about Carmelo Anthony's DWI

"I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest. He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."
*- Bruce Springsteen, April 16, on why he has endorsed Obama for president

"With a wholesale price of £875 per kg, this cannabis was worth around £2.5m to the importer, and offered a potential profit of around £1m through onward wholesale distribution. This quantity of cannabis would make approximately 72.5m joints * at 200mg of cannabis resin per joint - more than one joint for every man woman and child in the UK."
*- spokesman for the Serious Organized Crime Agency of the United Kingdom, talking about a boat seized in
Southampton last week. Three Israelis, two Ukranians, four Serbs and four British were arrested.

I like to think there is a profound connection between the four quotes, i.e. Obama is the clear frontrunner, but you've got to be high on a special brand of Slavic pot to support him.
