Ron Paul passes McCain in groovy cash category; tells Stephanopolous "We're on the up-slope"

Favorite Son presidential candidate Ron Paul is third in Republican cash raisin, which is fairly astounding considering that many of you rednecks consider him to be nothing more than a loose cannon on the wackiest ship in the Libertarian Navy.

He's passed US Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in fund-raisin.

All this for a Republican peace candidate who wants to abolish the IRS?

Yep.

Is there somethin happenin' here, but what it is ain't 'zactly clear?

He'll be on TV Sunday morning talkin on the "This Week" program about it all.

Will $2.4 million cash on hand at the end of the last quarter earn long-shot presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul enough credibility to warrant a spot in upcoming presidential debates? It should.

The ABC News Political Radar blog reported today that the nine-term congressman from Texas has $400,000 more cash on hand than his Republican rival Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Upon reading that news, I had to wonder whether or not groups sponsoring future presidential debates would follow the sad precedent set by Iowans for Tax Relief and Iowa Christian Alliance — co-sponsors of a presidential candidates forum in Des Moines June 30 — and refuse to consider Ron Paul a “credible” candidate.

Any group with even a shred of decency and self-respect must now include Ron Paul in any presidential debate it sponsors — or exclude John McCain, too!

Most stories I've seen on this (including the one linked) tend to conflate cash on hand with fundraising, but they aren't really the same thing.

It's nice that Paul still has funds in the bank, but I think the bigger story is that McCain has raised and blasted through much larger sums of money, and has so little to show for it in terms of polling. I still think it likely he'll right the ship and be a player thanks to past dynamics of Republican primary voting, but a person can't help but recall Phil Gramm's ill-fated presidential run, which raised and burned through a ton of money with no real impact.
