What came to mind upon hearing word that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been killed
"You live with the outlaws, you die with the outlaws."
That's what Augustus McRae said after he and Call hung Jake Spoon in Lonesome Dove.
Hat tip to Larry McMurtry.
from the Texas Petrochemical Underarm
"You live with the outlaws, you die with the outlaws."

Banjo, Gus' precise quote, at least from the movie, was as follows: "You know how it works, Jake. You ride with an outlaw, you die with an outlaw. I'm sorry. You crossed the line."
thanks, Tom.
it's been awhile since i've seen the movie or read the book.
also, besides a hat tip to McMurtry, i neglected to give one to the United States Armed Forces.
There was an earlier line somewhat like that, I can almost remember..."live by the sword, you die by the sword" something like that. Can't remember where it came from.
As for McMurtry, I loved all the Lonsome Dove sequels and prequels, but just for fun, read some biographies of Goodnight and Loving and see if they remind you of anything.
j.d., haven't read any of the goodnight or loving bios, so go ahead and tell us who they remind YOU of.
McMurtry?
not Cormac McCarthy.
do tell.
McMurtry took most of Lonsome Dove from those biographies. He filled in a lot of story line, dialog, etc., but many of the incidents in LD are described very well in the nonfiction accounts of their lives.
And, oddly, there is an old western movie, which came out way before LD the miniseries, that has the same characters and many of the incidents. I am sorry, I don't remember the name of the flick, it was not a memorable rendition. I believe one of the actors was Jack Elam, but I am not up to Rainman quality on my memory. Just as nutty, but without the retention.
Hey - I didn't REALLY think that was you on the bike. Just putting in the needle to see if you were watching.
I thought I DID tell, in a comment yesterday. Was it disapproved?
I said something like: their biographies contain incidents from which the LD incidents are obviously taken. McMurtry is and has been for some time, a student of Texas and other western history.
