On the Texans

Tom Kirkendall says the Houston daily's NFL writer should write about the specific personnel goofs made by the Houston Texans general manager, rather than just saying off with his head, and the head of Head Coach Dom Capers.

Hell, I can do that.

1. Picking offensive left tackle Tony Bosselli from Jacksonville in the expansion draft. The Texans got sold a bill of goods, their own "expert" medical opinions on Bosselli's bum shoulder notwithstanding. It was a good idea, getting an All Pro to anchor the offensive line, but it never came to fruition and the offensive line has been a mess since Day One. They should sue whoever provided the team's medical evaluation for malpractice. (I realize J'ville said they wouldn't give up Gary Walker unless Houston took Bosselli; now Walker's on his last legs.)

2. In the teams first draft, they used their two No. 2 picks on OT Chester Pitts & WR Jabbar Gaffney when they could have been picked lower in the draft (could have picked RB DeShaun Foster, TE Randy McMichael, QB David Garrard or RB Clinton Portis). They wasted their second No. 3 pick on a nose tackle named Charles Hill, whereabouts now unknown (Green Bay took RB Najeh Davenport in the 4th; Texans took RB Jonathan Wells with the first pick in the 4th)


3. In the second draft, they wasted their No. 2 pick on TE Bennie Joppru (could have picked Anquan Boldin) and their third No. 3 pick on QB Dave Ragone (could have picked RBs Chris Brown or Lee Suggs).

4. In the last draft, they used their 2nd No. 1 pick on LB Jason Babbin, who isn't panning out, bypassing RB Julius Jones, RB Tatum Bell, RB Steven Jackson, TE Ben Troupe, QB Matt Schaub; moreover, they traded a No. 2 and No. 3 pick to Oakland to obtain CB Phil Buchanon, who's no longer in the starting lineup and which led solid veteran CB Aaron Glenn to flee to Dallas.

5. I still think David Carr can be a good quarterback, but what if they had picked DE Julius Peppers with the top pick in the team's first draft and selected one of the aforementioned QBs in later drafts? We'll never know.

6. What do we do with the first or second pick of the first round next spring? I say pick USC's Reggie Bush if given the chance, or trade down to stock up on extra picks.
