If you’re ever in Houston, well, you better do right...
Nearly 2,000 prisoners in the Harris County Jail sleep on the floor due to overcrowding. Yeah, I know, most of you don't care. But, there are state standards that are supposed to be met. What's the solution? Pretty soon they'll be stacked up like cordwood, I tell ya.
The lockup wouldn't be so overcrowded if so many misdemeanor defendants weren't required to post cash bail, writes Scott Henson in Grits For Breakfast:
In the last ten years, the number of misdemeanor defendants who were ordered to pay bail instead of being released on "personal bond" increased more than 30,000%! No, that's not a typo: It increased more than thirty thousand percent!
