D.C. mayor starts blog, hits the wall
The mayor of Washington, D.C., started a blog but made the mistake of waiting 9 days until posting his second missive. This disconcerted his readers and constituents, one of whom wrote:
"Mr. Mayor: You really need to make some comments so we can know what your views are," asked "bjones." "How long do you think folks will stay tuned?"
This is bad blog etiquette, particularly for an elected official. If you start a blog, you need to go into it committed to posting on some sort of regular basis. Whether that's once-a-week or once-a-day or once-a-month, that's up to you. It's just good manners. If you deviate from that schedule, cause you go on vacation or just because you want to take a break or because you're sick or injured, let your readers know you'll be taking a break, and to check back in a week or two or three.
It's probably not too much to ask the mayor of a city to post on his blog once a week. Any less than that, and the mayor runs the risk of being accused of having nothing in his head worth imparting to the peeps. If you have nothing to say, then it stands to reason you're not that bright. That's not the message you want to send to the voters, if you're an elected official. I'd like to offer my services, right now, to any elected official who needs help writing his blog. It'll cost you. I'm not in this out of the goodness of my heart. The fee is negotiable. It'll cost you, but it'll be worth it, because your constituents will think you're writing it, and that you have well thought-out views that you want to share with the populace. I'll write pretty much whatever you want me to write, short of libel and slander. Oh hell, I'll libel and slander if you want, so long as you have adequate funds for proper legal representation. I'll strike the tone you want struck, and even try to mimic your speaking and/or writing style, if you so wish. I'll employ big words or small words, the local vernacular or the king's English -- whatever you say. I'll throw in quotable quotes of obscure song lyrics. I'm here to serve you and your blogging needs. I'm a good speller and I type fast.
