Governor pays back Bonnen

Our Man in Austin's deliciously ironic attempt to tweak the environmental lobby by sponsoring a bill to make the Texas blind salamander the official state amphibian of Texas has been shot down by Gov. Rick Perry.

We view this as payback by Perry for all the hay Bonnen made over the governor's attempt to innoculate Texas girls from the deadly HPV virus, a sexually transmitted disease that has become a real problem for females everywhere.

Even though parental permission would have been required before the HPV vaccination was administered, State Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, raised 9 kinds o' hell about it and somehow became a hero to parental units who get nervous and agitated when it's suggested their offspring may be sexually active.

Anyhow, all that had nothing to do with making the Texas blind salamander the official state amphibian of our fair state -- until the other day when the governor put the cattywampus on Bonnen's lame attempt to hope aboard the enviro bandwagon, despite his pitifully poor record of environmental stewardship.

So there you have it.
