Urban tops whitebread in Houston radio

KMJQ-FM grabbed the lead from KODA-FM during the last Arbitron ratings period.

The latest numbers show the urban adult contemporary station, known as Magic 102, has lengthened its lead over KODA's "Sunny 99.1" brand of adult contemporary music.

What's going on here?

There are more white people in the Houston-Galveston area than black people.

Yet, the "black" adult contemporary station is whuppin' on the "white" adult contemporary station.

Here's one possible factor: Magic 102 gives out $1,000 an hour during its morning show. Sunny 99 gives out free passes to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
