How does it feel? To be Bob Dylan? And not have any IDeeeeee?

The AP reports Bob Dylan was killing time before a concert in New Jersey when he was reported to police as a suspicious character. Bob didn't have any ID and the cops had no idea who he was when he told them.

Here's the full Associated Press report:

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

"I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work," Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

"What is your name, sir?" the officer asked.

"Bob Dylan," Dylan said.

"OK, what are you doing here?" the officer asked.

"I'm on tour," the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Blowin' in the Wind" said that he didn't have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night's show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation.

"He couldn't have been any nicer to them," Woolley added.

How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

The police were too nice to state the truth ... when Bob was asked his name, he muttered "bu di mu yeah". Fortunately he was wearing his performer's ID band around his neck (his handlers always make sure he wears this in public due to his lack of verbal skills), so the police, thinking he was possibly drunk or having a seizure, took him to the spa to further verify his identity.

Said but true.

Those two cops don't know who Elvis or the Beatles were either.

Guess there's no need for Obama to have Dylan and the cop over for beers, huh?

... altho on further consideration this news about Dylan wandering around a strange neighborhood alone is disturbing .. my wife saw him at the N.J. ballpark concert w/Willie and Johnny Cougar and sez Dylan returned for his encore with half of his suit jacket tucked into his pants, the other half hanging out, and finished his set that way. No one knew whether it was some sort of fashion statement or a bout of forgetfulness after taking a pee ...

i wouldn't say dylan is boring, but, to me, he's more a curiosity - particularly in concert. i don't know why he insists on singing the way he does live while there are so many more options he has with his voice - even with it's limited range. i've read that he had an "epiphany" in the nineties whereby he learned that his job is to perform. it's funny to me that he doesn't engage the audience anymore than he does. even in depends, he's still an enigma.

having seen dylan in '81, '94, '99,'00, '03, and now in '09, i couldn't pick a favorite show (not sure one should presume to rank the shows). i feel lucky (blessed?) at having seen him as he will likely be remembered long after we're all gone. he's still doing it his way and, from what i can tell, he hasn't succumbed to the same things that have befallen lots of our other cultural icons - for sure no facial reconstruction, no shoe-polish in the hair, no massive weight gain nor death-on-toilet. he hasn't starred in his own reality series, nor made frequent appearances on the tonight show (in clownish bow-ties). he's bob - plain and simple yeah, right!).

What's with these people writing in to say that your posts are boring?? Why do they read? It's fascinating stuff, not boring! Right on, Banjo.
