$325,000 fine on ConocoPhillips

The three-ring circus out at the ConocoPhillips refinery in Sweeny is wearing thin, even with the oil-friendly state regulators who decided today to whack the company with a $325,120 penalty.

The company failed to prevent and/or properly report unauthorized emissions during eight emissions events and one failed stack test in June, September, October, November and December of 2006 and January 2007.

$152,560 of the fine will be used to fund retrofitting of school buses with equipment designed to reduce particulate matter pollution through the Clean Cities/Clean Vehicles program in Brazoria County, so if your school district isn't in on the bus-fixin bandwagon, see your local school board member.

Do you have stats on how many times a year there is an "emission event"? It's so regular that I don't see why they even bother trying to pretend that little accidents just happen.

i guess i could add em all up if i wanted to, but i don't want to since it'd probably take a real long time.

I'd rather the $ go toward retrofitting school buses with seat belts.
