Addiction not all that glamorous (but prolly fun in the beginning, we're guessin)

Even if you're a celebrated author, raconteur, "fun-loving" hell-raiser, bon vivant, or however else you want to describe some celebrated personage -- whether it's Owen Wilson, the actor/writer, or Jim Morrison -- well, it's Hell To Be A DRUG and/or Alcohol addict.

Take Hunter S. Thompson, who did himself in a couple years ago.

Historian Douglas Brinkley recalls Sean Penn flying the bone-weary Thompson on a private jet to New Orleans. "He couldn't walk 10 yards without people holding him up. … He'd say things like, 'Well, I have to do myself in soon.' I would tell him to stop talking like that and he'd say 'What — I can't talk real with you now? … It's a f— option of mine. Do you think I'm gonna go … with a goddamn Nurse Ratched … through some detox thing? [Bleep] that.'"

Says Penn: "The last morning I saw him … we ran over to his car and he was just sitting in the front seat crying."[link]

Your bon mots were me to a T except for the celebrated part. If I had friends like Sean Penn twenty years ago I'd probably be dead too. Hunter should have kept better company.
