Why the Yankees wear pinstripes

Ira Berkow, the NY Times sportswriter, says the team was the first to go with pinstripes in order to make rotund slugger Babe Ruth look "slimmer."

The Bronx Bombers also were the first to put numbers on the players' jerseys, Berkow said on the ESPN morning show "Cold Pizza."

They gave Ruth #3 because he batted third, Lou Gehrig #4 cause he batted cleanup.

Berkow has a new sportswriting memoir out.
