Media machinations, Houston edition

Houston Community Newspapers has looked within for its newest acquisitions.

Within the 610 Loop of Houston, that is.

HCN, the final stop for former Houston Post editor/columnist/Texas historian Lynn Ashby, is buying the News Examiner group that publishes free weeklies in West University, Memorial, Bellaire and River Oaks, we hear.

Dr. Carolyn Farb, the socialite/philanthropist/Kinky Friedman fund-raiser, reads the River Oaks Examiner News and just loves it.

We think the Examiner News group puts out some fine publications and try to read them online to keep up with the goings on in Houston's affluent inner city neighborhoods, where we aspire to live after property valuations are corrected following the next recession.

Dude, you said th "R-word". Bad Karma.

I had been kicking myself in the keester because I never did get around to doing a re-fi when the interest rates were at their lowest. Not to take any money out, but to get the payment down and maybe save a little bit over the term of the loan.

Thinking about what is going to happen to all those folks who traded a $120,000 mortgage for a $225,000 mortgage on the same house, and went to Disneyland with the extra, well, let's just say I feel for them. If the housing market ever goes south, so to speak, and the house reverts back to a $120,000 house, that $225,000 mortgage wont seem like it was such a good deal.

The trendy geniuses who were flipping the adjustable mortages (ARMs) twice a year are already taking a beating in many parts of the country. To me an ARM is a form of gambling and everyone knows in the long run, the house always wins.
