A pinch of vinyl chloride for the Christmas season

Dow Chemical's Plant B was shut down a little more than an hour after the clock struck midnight on Christmas. While Brazosportians were strolling along sidewalks in their typical Christmas attire (top hats & waistcoats for the lads, minks & parasols for the lasses), singing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," around 6 lbs. of vinyl chloride was wafting through the gently falling snowflakes. A little more than 24 hours later, an estimated 225 lbs. of ethene was released during another snow-related "emissions event," Dow said. Ah, Christmas memories that'll last a lifetime.

Now you know.
